PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (MOTION)

Banner Flag, 2018

PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (MOTION) forms part of Relic Traveller: Phase 2, a multi-disciplinary project manifesting in performance, audio, moving image and prose.

Included in this series are three flags that highlight African diasporic identity. The design of each flag features 54 stars that represent the 54 countries of Africa. The colours of green, black, and red reflect its lands, its people and the struggles the continent has endured, respectively. The field of yellow gold represents a new day and prosperity.

The Pan African colours have been configured into symbols and forms to suggest various elements of community, motion (technology and the speed of darkness), and squadron. The flags embody icons which symbolise a move towards unity and equilibrium. The work does not frame Pan African Futurism as a utopian vision of the African continent, but aims to consider aspects of responsibility in relation to the hidden tremors of history.
