PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (MOTHERSHIP)
Flag Design, 2020 - 2023
PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (MOTHERSHIP) forms part of Relic Traveller, a multi-disciplinary project manifesting in performance, audio, moving image and prose.
MOTHERSHIP, designed in praise, honour and respect of the centre of community; Black Womxn. The Pan African colours have been configured into symbols and forms to suggest various elements. The colours of green, black, and red reflect African lands, its people and the struggles the continent has endured, respectively. The field of yellow gold represents a new day and prosperity. The work does not frame Pan African Futurism as a utopian vision of the African continent, but aims to consider aspects of responsibility in relation to the hidden tremors of history.
MOTHERSHIP has be produced in different formats across a number of different projects, featuring at the Liverpool Biennial in 2021, John Hansard Gallery for Africa Day in 2021, and at Margate train station as part of the 'Wayfinder' exhibition at Turner Contemporary. A silkscreen print of MOTHERSHIP was also available as an edition of 35 from the London Transport Museum Shop as part of the wider Art on the Underground project, and permanent commission at Westminster station.
