PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (DUALITIES)
Flag Design, 2021 - 2023
PAN AFRICAN FLAG FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (DUALITIES) forms part of Relic Traveller, a multi-disciplinary project manifesting in performance, audio, moving image and prose.
Part of the second series of flags produced to accompany the wider Relic Traveller projects, this design has featured in various programs which include Art on the Underground, Liverpool Biennial, PHI Foundation and the touring Wayfinder exhibition. In 2023 the design featured as part of The Gallery's, Season 3 'No But Where Are You Really From?'. The Gallery is a collaborative cultural institution conceived by Artichoke Trust, that aims to challenge traditional models of viewing art. The Gallery is the result of a unique partnership with the UK advertising industry which twice yearly brings art to everyone, delivered through street media usually reserved for big brand marketing and advertising.
DUALITIES, aims to examine postcolonial perspectives, the enduring connection between those born within the African continent and those of the African Diaspora, and the recent and growing phenomenon of returning diasporas. The Pan African colours have been configured into symbols and forms to suggest various elements whilst the colours of green, black, and red reflect African lands, its people and the struggles the continent has endured. The yellow gold represents a new day and prosperity. The work does not frame Pan African Futurism as a utopian vision of the African continent, but aims to consider aspects of responsibility in relation to the hidden tremors of history.
