Ain't No Place Like Home

Mixed Media, 2018

For 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Larry Achiampong presented a syncretic mixed-media installation exploring the dynamics of religion and domesticity within African diasporic communities living in the global West.

With Holy Cloud, the artist highlights the peculiarity in the pervasive representation of Jesus in contemporary African society; pale skin and European features — an aftereffect of slavery and colonisation on the African continent.

The remixed family photos of his Glyth series contrasts familial intimacy with pious imagery dominated by white bodies.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s Best, considers how belief systems within the diaspora are inflected by Christian imperialism in the present day.
